A World class Regulator of Professionals in Architecture & Quantity Surveying in Kenya.



The Board was established in 1934 under Cap 525 Laws of Kenya. The Boards mandate is to regulate the professions of Architecture and Quantity Surveying through training, registration and enhancement of ethical practice.
By the time Kenya attained independence; in 1963 the Board had registered Architects and Quantity Surveyors of European origin. There after the Asians were registered. It was until towards the late seventies and early eightiesAfricans of Kenyan origin were registered. To date the Board has registered 1556 Architects and 820 Quantity Surveyors.
The Board is established under Section 4 of Cap 525 Laws of Kenya. It consists of eight (8) members. Four of the members are appointed by the Cabinet Secretary in charge of matters related to Public Works; currently being the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Land Housing and Urban Development, Four (4) are Nominated by AAK and approved by the Cabinet Secretary. The Cabinet Secretary appoints one member among whom he has nominated to be the Chairman of the Board.
The Cabinet Secretary appoints the Registrar of the Board in adherence to Section 6(1) of Cap 525. The Registrar is charged with the duty of running the secretariat. He ensures that a Register is kept of every person who is suitably qualified to be registered as an Architect or a Quantity Surveyor.
The Board appoints committees in accordance to Sec 5(c) of Cap 525. Currently The Board has four (4) committees
  1. Architects & Quantity Surveyors Education board (AQSEB)
  2. Ethics and Practice Committee(E&P)
  3. Finance and Administration Committee(F&A)
  4. Management Committee (MC)

Each committee is chaired by a main Board member.

1. Architects and Quantity Surveyors Education Board (AQSEB)
This board is established in order to execute the scheme and curriculum for professional education and other activities of matters of continuous training for the registered persons and examinations for those wishing to be registered as provided for in sec.10 of the Act. Its specific mandate includes:

  • Conducting and administering professional examinations for Architects and Quantity Surveyors in Kenya
  • Conducting training for the registered persons by organizing Continuous Professional Development (CPD) seminars.
  • Appointment of trainers and examiners.
  • Links the Board with other training institutions such as universities and colleges.

2. Ethics and Practice Committee
This committee deals with all ethical issues in practice, complaints from other professionals, the construction industry and the public at large. They receive complaints, investigate and recommend the action to be taken by the Board. It advises the Board about the practice and reviews the scale of fees for the two professions.

3. Finance & Administration Committee
This committee oversees the expenditure of the Board, Provides fiscal management oversight, advises on the best way to improve the financial base of the Board, sets strategic direction of the Board and deals with all matters of staff welfare.

4. Management Committee
The Committee ensures that the Board delivers in accordance with policies provided primarily by Cap 525 and the Board, effective management of the Board in accordance with the Strategic Plan, interface of the Board and the parent Ministry and links the secretariat with the specific committees & the Board.

a}. Universities
The Board has a very good relation with the University of Nairobi, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenyatta University, Technical University of Kenya, Nairobi Institute of Technology and other Training institutions offering and willing to offer courses in Architecture and Quantity Surveying in the country.
The Board has ensured that its partnership with the Universities is intact. During the Boards training programs the Board has greatly relied on the University lecturers to feed it with their research materials.

By a memorandum of understanding between the Board and the University of Nairobi, the Board’s examinations and trainings have been conducted at the University premises. The Board is looking forward in signing more MOUs with other institutions of higher learning in various fields for the benefit of the two professions.

b} Professional Associations
The Board has maintained good relation with Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) and the Institute of Quantity Surveyors Kenya (IQSK). The AAK and IQSK co-operate with the Board which is the Regulator of the two professions in Kenya. The Board is also in close relation with the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA), and other professional bodies of the two professions in the region.

The Board encourages its members to venture into the regional countries. The Board has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding among the East Africa Community Countries. This is to facilitate their registered Persons to take advantage of the enlarged market as a result of the opening up of the borders and the East African Co-operation (East Africa Protocol).
The Board is committed to create the Architects and Quantity Surveyors Board for all East African states. This Board has been in fore front to facilitate the regulators of Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi to achieve this mission.

These are rules developed to assist in the smooth running of day to day of the disciplines of architecture and Quantity Surveying. The Board has come up with over 42 practice notes since year 1960 to 2009.The practice notes can be availed to any one from the secretariat without a fee.
